Nigeria’s Flamingos earned an impressive 4-0 win over Ecuador on Saturday, advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic in style, PathwayNews reports.
The Nigerian team’s performance reinforces their third-place finish at the previous tournament as no fluke. After a 4-1 win over New Zealand in their opening match on Wednesday, the Flamingos have collected six points from their first two matches, scoring eight goals while conceding only one.
Playmaker Shakirat Moshood, who netted one of the fastest goals of the tournament in their first match, opened the scoring with a 26th-minute penalty after Taiwo Afolabi was fouled in the box.
Peace Effiong saw two of her efforts saved by Ecuador’s Maria Rodriguez but found redemption in the second half when Harmony Chidi, who also scored, assisted Moshood for the fourth goal in added time.
The Flamingos will face the host nation, the Dominican Republic, in their final group phase match on Tuesday, but their place in the last eight is already secured.
