The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched an investigation into the destruction of a Nigerian passport at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Kenneth Udo, the NIS Public Relations Officer, issued a statement on Sunday, confirming the investigation after a video circulated on social media showing a female traveler destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the airport.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, August 10, 2024, involved Mrs. Igiebor, who was recorded tearing up her husband’s Nigerian passport shortly after they arrived in Lagos. When confronted, she responded angrily, saying, “Is it your passport?”
The NIS highlighted that this act might violate Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), which prohibits the intentional destruction of Nigerian travel documents and prescribes specific penalties for such offenses.
The statement also reaffirmed the NIS’s commitment to enforcing the Immigration Act to protect national security and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s legal and diplomatic instruments.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains unwavering in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments,” the statement added.
