The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (Okpravero Ufuoma) following allegations of soliciting bribes from a traveler.
This was announced by NIS Comptroller General, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, in a statement released by the Service Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kenneth Udo, on Thursday in Abuja.
Nandap stated that the officer’s behavior, which was captured in a video currently circulating on social media, does not align with the values and professional standards upheld by the NIS.
She strongly condemned the alleged misconduct, noting that it undermines the ongoing efforts to improve service quality within the organization.
Nandap assured that the officer has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings, in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules.
The NIS received the video, titled “This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” which shows the officer in question allegedly soliciting bribes from a traveler.
“This disgraceful act does not reflect our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy,” Nandap said. “As a result, the officer in question has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures.”
The Comptroller General reaffirmed the NIS’s commitment to rooting out corruption within its ranks, in line with its zero-tolerance policy on corruption.
She also emphasized that the NIS will continue to strive for excellence in service delivery, in line with the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
Nandap added that electronic gates (e-gates) are being installed at all international airports to facilitate smoother travel for passengers and prevent incidents like the one involving the suspended officer.
She encouraged the public to report any misconduct or corruption by NIS officers to the appropriate authorities.
