The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to implement policies that prioritize the welfare of the populace. This appeal was made by NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, in a communiqué jointly signed by Mr. Emmanuel Ugboaja, General Secretary of the Labour Centre, following an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) in Abuja.
The meeting was convened to assess the welfare of Nigerian workers and the general populace amid ongoing economic hardships. Ajaero stated that the NEC demanded the reversal of “ill-conceived policies” that have contributed to the current economic crisis.
In addition, the NEC has mandated the national leadership to designate a National Day of Mourning in honor of those who were injured or lost their lives during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. The NEC also called for an independent investigation into the killings and maiming of protesters, emphasizing that those responsible must be held accountable, and justice served to the victims and their families.
The communiqué urged the Federal Government to engage in meaningful dialogue with representatives of the protesters, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. Ajaero also called for immediate relief measures to alleviate the suffering of workers and the general populace, including direct food aid, subsidies on essential commodities, and other social safety nets.
Furthermore, the NEC expressed concern over attempts by government officials, particularly the Minister of Labour and the Registrar of Trade Unions, to curtail workers’ rights to political participation. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of what they described as insensitive advice from the Registrar of Trade Unions to prevent an industrial crisis.
Finally, the NEC called on all Nigerian workers to remain united and resolute in their demands for better governance, emphasizing the importance of solidarity. They also urged workers to stay safe during protests and to maintain a commitment to non-violence, ensuring that all actions remain lawful and disciplined.
