The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has reported the arrest of 243 suspected criminals from January to June.
Dr. Olusola Odumosu, the FCT NSCDC Commandant, disclosed this during an interview with Pathwaynews in Abuja on Sunday.
Out of the 243 arrests, Odumosu stated that 123 suspects have cases pending judgment in court. He highlighted that 159 individuals were apprehended for involvement in illegal mining activities, with the mines and steel department handling 39 cases so far.
Additionally, 34 suspects were arrested for vandalizing public infrastructure across locations such as Gwagwalada, Lugbe, Wuye, and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
“The Agro-Rangers unit also made two arrests related to cases pending in court, including one stemming from a communal clash between farmers and herders at Dafara Community in Kuje area council,” Odumosu added.
The Command’s Intelligence and Investigation Department contributed to the arrests with 48 suspects apprehended for offenses ranging from cyber fraud to domestic violence and child abuse. Eleven criminal cases have already been charged to court for prosecution, with ongoing investigations for others.
Odumosu highlighted the renewal of licenses for 100 Private Guard Companies (PGCs) and the training of 575 private guards. He noted the sealing of one PGC due to non-renewal of its operational license.
He credited the achievements to the dedication of the workforce and the support of the FCT Administration, emphasizing the command’s commitment to enhancing security and protecting critical infrastructure in Abuja.
Warning criminals, especially vandals targeting public infrastructure, Odumosu urged them to seek legitimate livelihoods elsewhere or face the consequences. He assured residents of continued vigilance and encouraged the public to collaborate with NSCDC and other security agencies by providing credible and timely information to curb criminal activities in the territory.
