The Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, HRM Obol (Dr) Obol Ofem Ubana, has shared the significance of the New Yam Festival, emphasizing its role in thanking God for turning half yams into whole ones and for helping the community overcome hunger before the new yam harvest.
Speaking at his palace during a media briefing to announce this year’s celebration, the monarch highlighted the festival, known as “Leboku,” as a crucial time for the Yakurr people. “Leboku is very important to the Yakurr people because it is an opportunity to thank God for changing the half yams they planted into whole yams. It shows that God is with us and holds authority over all of us,” he explained.
