Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has unveiled a pathway for Nigeria to rise and prosper like European and American nations. Speaking at the 68th Anniversary and 58th annual convention of the Gospel Faith Mission International (GOFAMINT) held at Gospel City, Ogun State, Osinbajo highlighted the need for a fundamental shift in the messages preached by churches.
In his lecture titled “The Christian Faith in the Political Struggles: A Case Study of Nigeria,” Osinbajo argued that the focus on wealth and lavish lifestyles among some religious leaders has distanced the church from its true mission. He stressed that this obsession has alienated the youth and others who seek more meaningful messages.
Osinbajo called on Nigerian churches to move away from preaching prosperity and wealth accumulation, urging them to focus instead on peace, productivity, and community development. He emphasized that churches have long been caught up in the pursuit of personal prosperity, neglecting the gospel’s true calling to promote peace, unity, and societal development.
He warned that when preachers prioritize personal gain, it hampers national development by corrupting minds and preventing people from making the right choices. Osinbajo pointed to nations like those in Europe and America, which, despite having fewer natural resources, thrive because of adherence to principles of hard work and productivity—principles rooted in true Christian teachings.
Criticizing the tendency of some preachers to overlook the questionable sources of wealth among their congregants, Osinbajo urged church leaders to propagate the correct version of the gospel that transformed other nations. He highlighted the importance of virtues such as integrity, hard work, and caring for the poor.
Osinbajo expressed optimism that by returning to these core values, the church could inspire Nigerians to become agents of positive change, contributing to the nation’s rise and fulfilling its immense potential.
