In a statement signed by Publicity Secretary Chief Bemgba Iortyom, the PDP sympathized with those who lost loved ones and properties in the attacks. The party condemned the actions of mobs who took the law into their own hands and highlighted the severe insecurity in the state, urging Governor Hyacinth Alia to change his approach to handling security.
The PDP suggested that Governor Alia consider disarmament and resettlement of the bandits as part of his strategy to tackle insecurity. Chief Iortyom noted that angry mobs rampaged through Zaki Biam, destroying both public and private properties, including the Local Government Council Secretariat, the Chairman’s Lodge, a public commodities warehouse, private businesses, and residences.
The party expressed concern over the lack of a rapid security response to quell the situation and mitigate the destruction. They called on Governor Alia to prioritize rapid response capabilities and improve the logistics and communication capabilities of security agencies in the state.
The PDP urged Governor Alia to initiate a disarmament and resettlement initiative for bandits in the Sankera area, as he had promised during his campaign, and to take steps toward de-escalating political tensions in the state. The party emphasized that security is a communal responsibility requiring cooperation from all segments of society.
To achieve security in Benue State, the PDP called on Governor Alia to lead efforts in mobilizing the people of Benue, regardless of political or religious differences, to combat insecurity and build a prosperous state. The party also urged the people of Benue to refrain from acts of lawlessness and recognize the challenges faced by the government in maintaining security.
