The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leadership in Ebonyi State has pledged to take every necessary step to revive the party in the state. At a stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu on Sunday, State Caretaker Chairman Steve Oruruo announced that the internal crisis affecting the party is being resolved amicably.
The PDP in Ebonyi State has faced significant turmoil, impacting its performance in the 2023 general elections. The crisis led to many party chieftains defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), prompting the National Working Committee (NWC) to appoint a caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs.
Addressing the media after the meeting, which Oruruo described as highly successful, he expressed optimism for a peaceful and inclusive congress in Ebonyi. He emphasized that the PDP is the foundational party in both the state and the nation, asserting that it cannot be allowed to falter.
“The era of discord and restiveness has come to an end; there is a rebirth of the PDP in Ebonyi State. We must be united to succeed because every member is indispensable,” Oruruo stated.
He underscored that Ebonyi belongs to the PDP, as the party uniquely understands the sensibilities and temperament of the people. Oruruo emphasized the importance of unity, saying, “We remain committed to serving them better, but we must be united.”
Oruruo also highlighted efforts to welcome back former members and ensure the party’s readiness for their return. He noted, “The national body has done everything necessary to ensure that the party bounces back.”
Regarding defections to the APC, Oruruo expressed confidence that those members would eventually return to the PDP. “We are building bridges instead of walls,” he added.
On the recent official defection of former Senate President Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, Oruruo clarified that Anyim had informed the party of his resignation months ago. He described the public celebration of Anyim’s defection as a formal acknowledgment of his decision.
