Sixteen lawmakers elected into the Plateau State House of Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who were sacked by the Court of Appeal, have made good their threat to ignore the court order and resume legislative duties.
The lawmakers’ move was however met with stiff resistance as policemen teargased them along with their supporters as they approached the House of Assembly complex.
Policemen and other security agencies had taken over the Assembly complex early in the morning, in a bid to forestall breakdown of law and other.
The security agents prevented the lawmakers from accessing the Assembly, using teargas.
The Court of Appeal, which is the arbiter in election petitions related to the House of Assembly and National Assembly, had sacked all elected 16 PDP lawmakers and declaring candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winners. The court had ruled that the lawmakers’ nomination was contrary to an alleged earlier court order.
The Court of Appeal also nullified the election of the state Governor, Caleb Muftwang. But the governor was lucky that governorship election petitions end at the Supreme Court.
The apex court reversed the Court of Appeal judgment and reinstated him.
