The Zone 5 Headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force announced the arrest of two individuals suspected of being gunrunners in Edo State. The update was provided by DSP Tijani Momoh, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer (ZPPRO), in Abuja on Saturday.
According to Momoh, the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police for Edo and Delta zones, Arungwa Nwazue, has ordered a crackdown on illegal arms in the area as the Edo gubernatorial election approaches.
In compliance with this directive, the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad, led by ASP Mohammed Usman, conducted a raid in Ileh community, Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on Friday at approximately 5:00 AM. The operation, based on credible intelligence, resulted in the arrest of two suspected gunrunners.

The squad also seized 30 locally fabricated firearms, including 23 single-barrel and seven double-barrel guns, along with one English-made double-barrel gun. Additionally, they recovered 13 live cartridges, a large toolbox, and a drill machine used for the fabrication of these illegal weapons.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects were involved in selling and renting these firearms to kidnappers, armed robbers, and cultists, who used them to terrorize the local population.
The AIG has mandated a thorough investigation into the case, and the suspects will be prosecuted in court. The ZPPRO urged all citizens to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and cooperate with the police to ensure safety in the community.
