The Police Command in Niger has confirmed an attack on MI Wushishi Estate in Minna by individuals suspected to be illegal artisan miners operating near the area.
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Wasiu Abiodun, the incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 2:00 PM. A distress call reported that suspected illegal miners, miscreants, and thugs were fighting and attacking homes in the estate.
A police patrol team, led by the Divisional Police Officer for Maitumbi Division, was promptly dispatched to the scene, successfully dispersing the attackers. One unidentified individual was killed during the attack and has been taken to the General Hospital morgue.
SP Abiodun stated that normalcy has been restored and a patrol team remains in place to prevent further incidents. An investigation is underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Pathwaynews learned that the attackers, who arrived in large numbers, vandalized vehicles, homes, and other property while many residents were away at work. This attack comes in the wake of the State Government’s recent ban on illegal mining activities due to rising insecurity and environmental issues.
