The Presidency has dismissed claims that the Federal Government is planning to declare a state of emergency in Kano State, labeling them as “mere rumor.”
Former Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had accused the Federal Government of compromising the state’s security by not withdrawing heavy security operatives guarding the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero. Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the ruling New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) in Kano, made these allegations during the launch of a road construction project in his hometown, Madobi.
“We will not fold our arms and watch enemies of the state destroy the peaceful co-existence of our dear state. We shall do everything possible to support the governor to succeed. I am happy that he is not distracted and is focused on achieving his goals,” Kwankwaso said.
He further claimed that some individuals from Kano, whom he described as enemies of the state and mentally ill, were advising the Federal Government to take over Kano through a state of emergency, calling it “madness of the highest order.”
In response, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, refuted Kwankwaso’s allegations. “There is no truth in it. It is a mere rumor. The Federal Government cannot declare any state of emergency in any state without the involvement of the National Assembly. There is no such plan. It is a mere rumor,” Onanuga told The Nation.
He emphasized that the National Assembly is in recess, and no president can unilaterally declare a state of emergency in any state.
