On Wednesday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought businessman Pascal Okechukwu, famously known as Cubana Chief Priest, before a Federal High Court in Lagos on charges related to the alleged mishandling of Naira currency.
He faced three counts for reportedly spraying and interfering with Naira notes during a social gathering at Eko Hotel in Lagos. During the proceedings, Mrs. Bilikisu Buhari represented the prosecution, while Mr. Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN, stood as the defendant’s counsel.
The defense initiated the proceedings by raising a preliminary objection, contesting the court’s jurisdiction, and submitting a bail application on behalf of the defendant. Notably, the prosecution did not oppose these motions.
Upon hearing the charges, the defendant pleaded not guilty. In support of the bail application, the defense emphasized the defendant’s health condition, citing palpitations due to his weight. They also highlighted the nature of the offense, classified as a misdemeanor with penalties ranging from a fine to imprisonment.
Arguing for bail, the defense stressed the defendant’s clean record as a first-time offender and his role as an employer supporting over 1000 employees. They urged the court to grant bail on generous terms.
In response, the prosecutor left the decision on bail to the court’s discretion. As of now, the court has yet to issue a ruling on the matter.
