Rep. Ginger Onwusibe (LP-Abia), leader of the Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives, has defended Deputy Speaker Rep. Benjamin Kalu’s recent invitation for Abia State Governor Alex Otti to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Onwusibe made his remarks in response to criticism from Rep. Obi Aguocha (LP-Abia), who had labeled Kalu’s comments as disrespectful toward the governor.
Onwusibe argued that Kalu’s suggestion was simply an effort to promote his party, the APC, and did not show any disrespect toward Otti. “Kalu did nothing wrong by marketing his party and inviting Otti to join the APC,” Onwusibe said, emphasizing that Kalu spoke highly of Otti in the video, noting their friendship and the governor’s performance.
He further criticized Aguocha for misinterpreting Kalu’s remarks, stating that twisting the narrative would not serve any constructive purpose. Onwusibe also expressed his loyalty to Kalu as the Deputy Speaker and denied any intentions of pursuing a governorship pairing with Kalu in 2027, urging his colleagues to avoid unnecessary political tension.
He concluded by calling for a measured response to Kalu’s comments, viewing them as a normal expression of party loyalty rather than an attack on Governor Otti.
