Hon. Fredrick Agbedi, Chairman of the House Committee on FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, has pledged robust support for the victims of the recent fire outbreak at Karu Market in the Federal Capital Territory. During an assessment visit on Wednesday, Agbedi led other committee members to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by the fire and emphasized the market’s crucial role in the local economy.
Expressing condolences to the affected traders, Agbedi assured swift action from the House to secure federal government intervention to alleviate their plight. He stated, “We want to condole with our brothers and sisters who are traders in this market and have lost their valuables to the inferno. As an assembly that legislates for the FCT, we stand in solidarity with you as citizens contributing to the development of the FCT and the nation.”
Agbedi highlighted ongoing efforts to collaborate with authorities including the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), the market union, FCT Administration, and federal agencies to provide immediate relief and support. He called upon the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other federal bodies to assist in mitigating the disaster’s impact.
Christopher Maikalangu, AMAC Chairman, emphasized the severe impact on the market’s 1,300 traders and appealed for urgent intervention. Chief Joseph Narai of Karu expressed gratitude for the National Assembly’s support and noted the shock and devastation among traders. Suleiman Haliru, Chairman of the market’s Board of Trustees, reiterated the urgent need for improved safety measures and robust support systems for FCT markets.
The House of Representatives’ commitment underscores their dedication to aiding Karu Market’s recovery and ensuring the welfare of affected traders.
