Residents of Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, are experiencing palpable fears following a heavy rain that caused flash floods in several locations on Monday. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (Nimet) has listed Bayelsa as one of the states expected to experience heavy rain and flooding.
In several affected areas, residents lamented the lack of significant action from the state government to assure their safety amidst the imminent flooding threat. At Okaka, locals blamed the poor drainage system for the flash flood. Mr. Tam Odoki urged the government to immediately implement plans to mitigate flooding effects, rather than waiting until homes are submerged.
In Swali, near Aeroplane Road and opposite the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Yenagoa office, residents complained about a partially blocked canal causing the flash flood. Mike Igodo noted, “The downpour affected us due to the canal in the area not flowing well. The Correspondent Chapel of the NUJ visited during their independent tour, but the issue remains unaddressed by the government.”
Residents of Ruthmour Street, Edepie, Azikoro town, Dimrose, Saptex off Fido Road, and Green Villa were also severely impacted. Pastor Ignatius from Ruthmour Street criticized the Bayelsa State government’s slow response to the people’s plight. He mentioned that despite residents’ calls for action since January, the government has not taken concrete steps to prevent flooding.
Ignatius also condemned the Bayelsa State Flood Committee for its lackadaisical approach and criticized the Bayelsa State Emergency Agency for failing to provide adequate information to residents in preparation for the 2024 flooding.
In response, the state government has appealed for calm, assuring residents that they have not been abandoned. The Commissioner for Environment, Ebi Ben Ololo, expressed sadness over the flash floods and emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing flood-related issues promptly.
“I am deeply concerned about the recent flash floods that have affected several areas in our state. The heavy downpour has caused hardship and disruption for many of you, and I want you to know that we stand with you during this challenging time,” Ololo stated.
He added, “Our Prosperity Government led by Senator Douye Diri is committed to addressing flood-related issues promptly and effectively. We are actively working on measures to mitigate the impact of floods and enhance resilience in vulnerable parts of the State. I have personally visited the affected areas to assess the situation firsthand and ensure that necessary actions are taken.”
Ololo urged residents to stay safe and reassured them that their well-being is the government’s top priority, promising that together they will overcome these challenges and build a more resilient Bayelsa State.
