The Rivers State Police have issued a warning about criminal elements hijacking the #EndBadGovernance protest, targeting motorists and businesses across the state.
SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, expressed concern over the situation in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. She indicated that the protest, which had initially aimed to address governance issues, has devolved into criminal activities.
“The ongoing protests in Rivers have descended into chaos, with hoodlums harassing residents and disrupting traffic,” Iringe-Koko said. “They are forcing motorists to attach leaves to their vehicles, setting up canopies on main roads, destroying billboards, and threatening traders.”
The spokesperson also noted that protesters have been setting tires on fire and engaging in other forms of disruption.
Iringe-Koko highlighted that the organizers were losing control of the crowd and stressed that such actions are inconsistent with peaceful protest. She called for calm and advised protesters to confine their activities to designated areas, such as Abali Park and Pleasure Park.
“Any further disruptions will be met with firm resistance, and offenders will face arrest and prosecution,” she warned. “We also urge parents to advise their children and wards, as the police will not tolerate any breach of peace or unlawful activities.”
In related news, Iringe-Koko dismissed reports of demonstrators attacking the private residence of former Governor Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt. “I am not aware of such an incident; I am confident that nothing of the sort occurred,” she stated. She assured that the police would investigate the matter thoroughly and share their findings with the public.
