Allwell Ihunda, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Rivers State chapter, narrowly escaped an attack by angry youths on Tuesday along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.
Ihunda, who is also the outgoing Chairman of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, was heading to the council headquarters with his aides and security personnel when the incident occurred.
According to Pathway News, Ihunda exited his vehicle and attempted to enter the council building but was confronted by a group of youths at the entrance. The youths began shouting and following him, attempting to grab him as he rushed back towards his car.
His security detail, affectionately known as the Mayor’s guards, fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd. Ihunda quickly got into a black SUV with his aides and drove away while the youths continued to fire into the air.
Witnesses reported hearing the youths shouting, “That is him, Allwell. Chase him. Who is he? Look at him, the Mayor is running. Chase him. Are you mad? God punish you. Don’t run, come, you will see pressure. We are not afraid of you. You are mad. Thunder will fire you.”
