Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has hinted at plans to revive the Neighbourhood Watch, a community-based security outfit established by the previous administration. Following a closed-door meeting in Port Harcourt with leaders of the security group, Mr. Wogbo Lawrence, Head of Command for Rivers Neighbourhood Watch, expressed optimism about the governor’s assurances.
Lawrence highlighted that despite receiving little attention or support, the Neighbourhood Watch has managed to sustain about 1,150 personnel, with roughly 50 officers deployed in each of the state’s 23 Local Government Areas. He noted that members were encouraged by Governor Fubara’s commitment to reviving the outfit.
“For years now, we have been working, and that is why we came today to see our Governor. He assured us that he is going to revive the agency in a short time,” Lawrence said. He emphasized that despite the lack of government funding, the security team has continued to operate and fight oil theft in the region. Lawrence pledged that once the agency is fully revived, they will be able to do even more to protect the community.
