An unidentified middle-aged man may have committed suicide by jumping into the Gbodofon River in Osogbo, Osun State, as reported by Pathway News.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. A witness named Muri recounted that he overheard the man expressing his weariness with life before leaping into the river. “I saw him coming toward me on the bridge, murmuring something in Yoruba that sounded like ‘ile aye ti su’ (I am tired of this life), before swiftly jumping over the railings into the river,” Muri said.
Men of the Osun State Fire Service were called to the scene in an attempt to rescue the man before he drowned. However, when they arrived, no trace of him was found in the overflowing river.
Mr. Ibrahim Adekunle, spokesperson for the fire service, confirmed the incident to Pathway News. He stated that the firefighters were unable to reach the man due to the elevated water level and strong current. “Our stations at Okefia and Abere deployed personnel immediately to the scene when we were informed about the incident. However, our officers were unable to rescue the man because of the water level, which has risen due to the downpour,” Adekunle explained.
Adekunle emphasized that suicide is never a solution to any challenge.
