The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) have commended President Bola Tinubu for his “radical and proactive” measures to address rising food prices. In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, TMV Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Sunday Gyungoun expressed optimism that these measures would soon yield positive results.
“The measures will stem the tide of inflation and help to drive down the prices of food in the country,” the statement read.
TMV praised the bold initiative to temporarily lift import duties on certain food items, describing it as a step in the right direction. The group highlighted the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of wheat, maize, cowpeas, and husked-brown rice, among others, as key actions that would reduce food prices.
According to TMV, these measures reflect the government’s genuine concern for the welfare of the masses and farmers. The intervention is expected to reduce inflation in the food sector and facilitate the importation of 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat and 250,000 metric tonnes of maize.
“For us, these proactive interventions depict the government as responsible and responsive to the yearnings of the people. We are of the strong opinion that in the final analysis, these measures will address the issue of food insecurity in a very short while,” TMV stated.
The group also acknowledged the government’s move to adopt recommended retail prices for imported food items, which they believe will make these items more available and affordable. TMV is convinced that this control measure will curb the excesses of exploitative middlemen seeking to take advantage of the situation.
