Following the conclusion of the Edo Governorship Election, traders at the bustling Ikpoba Hill Market in Benin quickly resumed business on Saturday night. The Pathway News reports that movement restrictions were in place during election hours, which ended at 6 p.m., resulting in the closure of shops and markets throughout the day.
Despite opening late, traders expressed optimism about their sales prospects. Many noted that certain customers rely on daily market visits, regardless of the time.
Mrs. Loveth Idemudia, a fruit seller, explained that she returned to the market to prevent her goods from spoiling. “I bought many loaves of bread and fruits. If I don’t sell them tonight, they might go bad. I won’t be able to sell tomorrow morning because I’ll be going to church,” she said. Despite arriving around 6:39 p.m., Idemudia was satisfied with her sales and hoped to sell out before closing.
Mrs. Angela Osas, who sells ‘fufu’, also shared her positive experience, stating that she sold a bucket of the food within an hour. “I got this business idea after the 2023 General Elections, and tonight has been rewarding,” she remarked.
A tomato seller, known as “Mama Baby,” was similarly optimistic, saying her priority was to avoid any loss. “I didn’t come early, but people are gradually buying since I arrived an hour ago,” she said.
Customer Cecilia Emeka, who came to make purchases, noted that many shops in her area remained closed, prompting her to visit the market instead.
