Traditionalists in Osun State have renewed calls for political office holders in Nigeria to take traditional oaths of office, arguing that this measure could help eliminate bad governance. Dr. Oluseyi Atanda, President of the Traditional Religion Worshipers Association (TRAWSO), made this statement during the 2024 Isese Day celebration in Osogbo, the state capital.
Atanda emphasized that good governance should begin at the local government level, with traditional oath-taking made mandatory for all officeholders. “We also implore that in line with the End Bad Governance initiative, after the local government election, our elected councillors and chairmen should take a traditional oath of office as an example of Good Governance Initiative,” he stated. He added, “We are living examples that traditional oath-taking does not kill but rather ensures one remains mindful of their responsibilities.”

He also mentioned that TRAWSO would pursue legal and legislative avenues to ensure that the process of selecting Obas and their roles return to traditional practices for the benefit of all.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, announced plans to establish a committee to address disputes among Christians, Muslims, and traditional worshippers in the state. He assured that the committee would serve as an advisory body to prevent religious crises and resolve conflicts. Adeleke pledged to respect and give due recognition to all religions without bias.
“Our government adheres to the laws of the country, which grant everyone the liberty to choose and practice their religion,” Adeleke said. “As the governor, he respects Christianity, Islam, and traditionalism equally. In the case of disputes, the governor will form a committee comprising representatives of the three religions to advise on religious matters. The committee will be formed very soon,” he added.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, represented by the Agboluaje of Agbaje-Ife, Oba Adekunle Adebowale, urged TRAWSO members to conduct more research into Yoruba traditions to showcase their uniqueness and counter any derogatory comments about them.
