Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, has regained normalcy after a tragic incident led to clashes between youths from Opolo and Okutukutu communities.
The unrest prompted the Bayelsa State Police Command to deploy 10 tactical teams to quell the violence stemming from a renewed land dispute between the two communities.
The conflict escalated when Chief Ezekie Gabriel reported the murder of two individuals in Opolo community to the police. This news incited the youths of Opolo to barricade major roads and streets, seeking reprisals against Okutukutu.
Tensions heightened when a police team dispatched to restore order was attacked by suspected Opolo youths, who accused the police of favoritism. Allegations surfaced that teargas was selectively deployed against Opolo youths while sparing those from Okutukutu.
Amidst the chaos, some hoodlums seized and damaged a police drone during the confrontation.
However, with reinforcements, law enforcement managed to restore order and recover the drone, though some of its components were damaged.
As the situation stabilized, the popular Opolo market reopened, along with schools, businesses, and shops in the area. Police patrols remained vigilant throughout Monday night and Tuesday morning to prevent further violence.
Despite ongoing efforts to calm the situation, police authorities are determined to apprehend those responsible for attacking the police team and damaging the drone. Two suspects have already been arrested, and their statements are aiding in the ongoing investigation to identify and detain other culprits.
While a meeting between representatives from both communities was scheduled at the Bayelsa State Government House, police presence in the area remained consistent, emphasizing the commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring justice prevails.
