The University of Benin has imposed a ban on the use of hot plates, ring boilers, and gas cookers in its hostels to address rising energy-related expenses. The university’s management, through a circular signed by Registrar Ademola Bobola, announced that any student violating this prohibition will face rustication.
The decision, revealed in a circular obtained by Pathwaynews on Sunday, comes in response to a severe electricity crisis affecting the university. The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) increased the university’s monthly electricity bill from N88 million to N250 million, leading to the disconnection of both campuses. This disruption caused student protests on July 3, after prolonged power outages and reliance on generator power.
In light of these issues, the university’s Senate had temporarily closed the institution to prevent further unrest. With the reopening announcement, Bobola emphasized the need for compliance with the university’s new electricity supply and usage arrangements. Students are required to settle any outstanding fees before returning to exams, with evidence of payment necessary for exam entry.
Bobola also reminded students to adhere to university rules, maintain good conduct, and refrain from participating in unauthorized gatherings or demonstrations on campus.
