The Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace, has expressed concern over the treatment of Nigerians abroad, attributing it to negative stories that misrepresent the nation.
During a courtesy visit to the Cross River State Deputy Governor, Peter Odey, in Calabar, Malam Ndace emphasized that while Nigeria may have its flaws, the country is not accurately depicted in the global arena.
He stressed the importance of Nigerians confidently telling their own stories without apology.
“When you travel abroad with a Nigerian passport, you are often treated with disdain, a treatment unbefitting of your status,” Ndace noted. “This unacceptable perception stems from the negative stories circulated about Nigeria. We may not be perfect, but we are not what is being portrayed.”
Malam Ndace urged for a deliberate effort in telling Nigeria’s story, especially in the face of social media distortions, lies, and misinformation.
“This is not the time to do good and remain silent. We must be unapologetic and confident in narrating Nigeria’s true story,” he stated.
He called for a partnership with the state government to promote Nigeria’s positive aspects, highlighting that the country is not defined by negative news alone but also has many achievements to celebrate.
Reflecting on his tenure as Director General, Ndace noted that his focus has been on enhancing VON’s role as a key storytelling agency in Nigeria, committed to improving the country’s image by showcasing its potentials.
In response, Cross River State Deputy Governor Peter Odey praised Malam Ndace as a “true and thoroughbred professional,” whose extensive experience has elevated the global standing of Voice of Nigeria.
