In Nigeria, where over 16 million individuals are grappling with humanitarian crises, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has launched significant initiatives to address these challenges and provide long-lasting solutions. These efforts have had a profound impact, particularly in the remote and underserved regions of the country.
As part of its commitment, the administration is working closely with both local and international humanitarian actors to unveil additional durable solutions in the near future. The government is also dedicated to ensuring the safety of humanitarian workers and is collaborating with various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to enhance security and support for those on the front lines as well as for individuals affected by these crises.
Recent advancements include the establishment of resettlement homes in Zamfara, completed in October 2023, and an ongoing shelter project in Benue, which aims to accommodate millions of displaced persons. These initiatives are critical in addressing the urgent shelter needs of those displaced by humanitarian crises. In addition to providing housing, the government is also focusing on comprehensive support that includes food distribution, educational programs, medical assistance, and livelihood start-ups, all designed to bolster the well-being of affected individuals.
Dr. Betta Edu, marking World Humanitarian Day, emphasized the need for a united effort among all humanitarian stakeholders to achieve better outcomes and mitigate the poverty faced by those displaced from their homes and livelihoods. “Renewed Hope will address these issues in the near future,” she stated, calling for increased support for both federal and state governments. She also urged host communities and security agencies to prioritize the protection of frontline humanitarian workers to ensure their safety and effectiveness. She noted that part of the Renewed Hope master plan is to gainfully employ Over 1 Million Nigerians between 2024-2030 as Humanitarian Aid Workers in different locations in Nigeria to support the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to address humanitarian crises as the needs arise across the country. The will directly be in-charge of providing humanitarian assistance to Persons of concern. This employment will be on short term contracts as needs arise! This Humanitarian Frontline workers must be protected.
As we celebrate World Humanitarian Day, Dr. Edu calls on everyone to embrace peace and compassion, recognizing that both human and natural causes contribute to humanitarian crises. Through collective action and a commitment to humane values, Nigeria can overcome these challenges and build a more resilient and supportive environment for all its citizens.
