The Yobe State Security Council has called on traditional and religious leaders to actively support the government’s initiatives to strengthen peace and security across the state.
This appeal was made in a statement by Alhaji Mamman Mohammed, the Director-General of Press and Media Affairs for Governor Mai Mala Buni, in Damaturu on Tuesday. The council, chaired by Governor Buni, met to review the state’s security situation in light of recent nationwide protests.
The council expressed concern over the actions of hoodlums who took advantage of the protests to loot and destroy property in Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru towns.
Parents and guardians were urged to monitor their children closely and prevent them from being used as agents of destruction. The council emphasized that everyone is a stakeholder in peacebuilding and should support security agencies by providing timely and useful information on suspicious activities in their communities.
The public was also advised to remain vigilant and report any illicit activities, including drug trafficking and consumption.
Governor Buni commended the state’s security organizations for their professional handling of the protests and assured them of the state government’s continued support. He emphasized the need for a proactive approach to security, noting that the state is emerging from prolonged security challenges and cannot afford new forms of violence and instability.
In response to the improved security situation, the governor directed that the curfew in Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru be further relaxed, now running from 6 pm to 6 am. The heads of the security agencies assured the government of their increased dedication to maintaining sustainable security across the state.
